Jodie, I’m so glad you could join us today to talk about your new book and your writing journey. First, can you tell us a bit about your book and what inspired you to write this story?

Thank you for having me here today. I’ve always loved mail-order bride stories so I wondered what would happen if a pastor sent off for a bride and when she arrived she isn’t anything like what he’d advertised for. What happens, especially when they’re already married by proxy?

And is this the first book you have published?

Oh my no. This is actually my seventh. I have four novellas out, one other full-length novel, and a non-fiction etiquette book that goes along with my other full-length novel.

How long has it taken you to get published?

I wrote for many years before my first book came out in print. Since 2016, I’ve had seven books published.

What draws you to writing historical romance as opposed to straight up romance or romantic comedies?

While I try to always include humor in my stories, my all-time favorite genre is historical romance. I love the dresses from the 19th Century as well as the fact that so many new things were being invented, introduced, etc. To me, it’s an exciting time to write about. It hasn’t been until I got older that I realized how much I enjoy learning new things about history. 🙂

Are there any authors who’ve influenced you in your writing? Do you have any favourite authors?

The main influencer for my writing has been Laura Ingalls Wilder. It was reading her books and watching the Little House on the Prairie TV series that caused me to fall in love with the era and encourage me along in the writing journey.

As for favorite authors: Karen Witemeyer, Jen Turano, Mary Connealy, Regina Jennings, Kristi Ann Hunter, and Susanne Dietze.

What advice would you give to other writers trying to break into the Christian market?

Pray and wait for God’s timing. His way is always best.

What hobbies do you like to do when you’re not writing?

I enjoy knitting and of course spending time with my husband. I’m currently working on a polar bear sweater for one of my granddaughters.

Do you have any quirky, must-have rituals before you get to writing? (candle burning, café latte, coffee shop only, etc.)

Good question. I usually make sure I have my water bottle filled, soft music playing in the background and often a hot cup of tea if it’s cold, iced tea if it’s warm.

If you could have dinner with three famous authors, alive or dead, who would they be?

Oh my, I’m never great at this kind of question. Let’s see. I’d pick Laura Ingalls Wilder, Karen Witemeyer, and Jen Turano.
