Happy Saturday! Are you looking for a great summer read for the cottage or back deck?

I have just the book for you! I recently read this lovely Highlander romance from Harlequin Historicals. It’s been a while since I’ve read one and this story totally enamoured me. Here’s what you need to know…

When Royce wakes with no memories and suddenly blind, his situation seems dire. The only thing he remembers is being attacked by shadowy figures…but not the beautiful woman who came to his rescue. Now Iona MacKenzie’s every touch drives Royce wild. But when news of a manhunt for him reaches them, Royce must uncover his past if he has any chance of saving himself—and the woman he’s falling for…

This was my first book by Jeanine Englert but it won’t be my last. I thoroughly enjoyed this swoony Highland romance between Laird Royce Cameron and Iona McKenzie. I loved the twist on the Beauty and the Beast trope and how deftly the author used it to bring both characters through their learning arcs. The descriptions of Lismore and the area made you feel like you were right there and gave the book an “Outlander” feel to the story. There was amnesia, the loving but feisty healer, a blind hero both physically and emotionally, forced proximity – all the tropes I love in an historical! The author has a real gift with conveying emotion and sexual tension that brings the characters to life. An excellent read for summer time and I thank the publisher for providing me with an arc copy. The opinions expressed are my own.

The Nativity

Mary, mother of Jesus. My heart can barely grasp what an extraordinary woman she must have been to be chosen the mother of the world’s Savior. I imagine her perfect, without sin. Though this is unlikely, God blessed her above all women. Yet His path for Mary wasn’t easy. To avoid disgrace as an unwed mother, God instructed her fiancée to marry her and to travel together from Nazareth to safety in Bethlehem.

The young couple trekked on unpaved trails for four days along flatlands and over hills, possibly in freezing temperatures. When they reached Bethlehem, no doubt weary, they had to settle for a cave—used to house animals—in which to rest where Mary gave birth.

The least desired place for a birthing mother became the most honored and beloved story of all time. The young couple listened to God, trusted, obeyed, and persevered. Hard as it was—which many of us can’t comprehend just how difficult—God provided for them along the way and when they reached their destination.

I wonder if the world silenced to hear the first cry of the King. If an unidentified light glowed in the dim cave, the moment Jesus entered the world. If the waters rested and the winds ceased. Luke 2:13-14 tells us after shepherds in Bethlehem were told of Jesus’ birth, the angels sang. We will never know the full magnificence of all that took place during the nativity.

What an honor it is to have included the nativity in my novel Dress Shop Miracles. It’s one of my favorite scenes as my characters traveled from a hard path to hope, love, and miracles. I hope you love the story of Molly and Ted as much as I did writing it, and guess what?

Welcome to the blog, Colleen! Please tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m a New Englander by birth, but I met and married a Southerner in college. Since we married, I’ve lived more of my life in the South than I did in New England, although I don’t consider myself Southern. Warren is my own real-life hero! I love horses and have been privileged to own several horses from the time I was young. Right now, I’m down to one horse, Monty, who is an affectionate sweetheart. I also love antiques and have filled my house with them. My son tells me I live in a museum.

Can you please share with us what your latest book is about?

Warrior’s Heart is a second chance at love story. Della and Wild Wind meet in Book 2, Wounded Heart, when he captures her in a raid. At that time, her heart is already given to Shane, his Cheyenne half brother. It isn’t until Book 3 that their romance can fully develop, although she’s grieving for her dead husband. Also there was much hostility in those days toward the tribes, which complicates Wild Wind’s life.

What was the catalyst for your interest in writing?

I think my love for writing developed from my love of reading. When I was younger, I fell in love with many fictional characters. I yearned to create my own fictional people and give them adventures, so I did. My mother tells me I wrote my first story in third grade. When I was in grammar school, I’d write a long story in daily installments, and my friends would read the latest installment on the bus on the way home from school. I wrote novels all through high school, and now I’m doing the thing that I love!

Were there any surprises that came up as you wrote your story?

Actually, the entire premise for Warrior’s Heart came as a surprise. I originally didn’t plan to write Wild Wind’s story. I planned for Book 3 in my series to feature another character. However, Wild Wind is such a powerful person, he was in my head demanding that I tell his story. I wasn’t getting anywhere with my other idea, so I scrapped that and gave in to Wild Wind. As I worked on a plot for Wild Wind’s story, I never intended for Della and Wild Wind to marry.

She and Shane Hunter had married, and I planned to give Wild Wind another love interest. Once again, Wild Wind took control and tossed out my ideas for his story. He absolutely refused to love the lady I’d created for him. Wild Wind insisted that he already loved Della and refused to love anyone else. Since Della and Shane were married, I had to make her a widow in Book 3 to allow Wild Wind and her to have a romance. Once I gave in to him on this point, their story came together and flew off the page.

I love it when that happens! Who was your favorite character to create?

Although I love the characters in all my books, Wild Wind was definitely my favorite character. From the very beginning, he became almost larger than life and took control of the plot. Even when he was introduced in the last third of Wounded Heart, he dominated the story. I had to be careful not to let him overshadow Shane, who was the hero in Book 2. By the time he had his own story in Warrior’s Heart, he was a powerful person who dominated the plot and didn’t let circumstances control him. I fell in love with him!

How did you come up with the names of your hero and/or heroine?

I researched popular female Victorian names to get Della’s name. The name “Della” seemed to suit the character that I was creating, so I chose that one for her. As for Wild Wind, I researched male Cheyenne names and found that one for him. Since I wanted his character to be a man who would disregard white society’s law and order and become a fearsome Dog Soldier, “Wild Wind” fit the criteria. Once I gave him that name, he lived up to it!

What does your family think of your writing?

My writing is definitely a family project. I have two daughters-in-law who are trained in art and design. One of my daughters-in-law helps me with my newsletter design and develops the announcements for my book signings. The other one creates my bookmarks and other swag. My sons lend their technical skills where I need them, especially with my newsletter. And my husband listens to my story ideas, sympathizes with my setbacks, takes me on countless research trips, and cheerfully eats sandwiches or leftovers when I don’t have time to cook supper because I’m immersed in one of my manuscripts.

You’re so lucky! Can I borrow your son for my newsletter? Just kidding! What’s next for you as an author?

I’ve sent the manuscript for Book 5 to my editor. Book 5, Valiant Heart, is the final book in my Frontier Hearts Saga. Now I’m developing ideas and doing research for my next series.

You’ve been on quite a journey with this series! Here’s the cover and back blurb for Warrior Heart:

Della Hunter is struggling to adjust to her new life as a widow and be a single parent to her young son. Her world is further complicated when the man she almost married seven years before rides back into her life.

Wild Wind, her late husband’s half-brother, is a Cheyenne chieftain and a Dog Soldier of fearsome reputation. He no longer fights the soldiers, but he can’t tolerate a life on the reservation, so he makes the dangerous trek into the white man’s world. He comes to the Slash L ranch looking for work.

As he takes his brother’s place training horses on the Slash L, he must navigate two cultures and make his way in a society hostile to the tribes. During the years they were separated, his love for Della never wavered. While she grieves for Shane, he determines to woo and win her. Can he bridge the gap between his two worlds, and can he find it in his heart to love Della’s God as she does?

Please share your favourite excerpt from your book!

This is part of the scene at the beginning of Warrior’s Heart, where Della and Wild Wind meet again after a seven-year separation. Della is visiting Shane’s grave, and Wild Wind comes to the Slash L ranch looking for work.

“The rider halted mere yards from her. Recognition punched Della in the chest. She hadn’t seen this man in almost seven years, yet she knew him. Wild Wind. Shane’s half-brother sat his mount almost within touching distance.

For silent moments, Wild Wind stared down at her. An eagle feather fluttered from a lock of his long, dark hair. A fringed buckskin shirt and leather leggings molded his muscular frame. A rifle slung over his shoulder hung from a leather strap.

The years they’d spent apart hadn’t tempered his arrogance. He sat tall and erect upon his mount, head unbowed, his lean features expressionless. At last, he spoke. “Lona.”

Hearing him utter the name he’d given her years ago took her back to the weeks she’d spent in his Cheyenne village. Weeks when she’d thought she’d marry him, if Shane didn’t rescue her first. Remembering the more recent tales she’d heard of Wild Wind and his Dog Soldiers fighting the army in bloody raids during the last six years reminded her that this man had a reputation as a fearsome warrior. “Wild Wind. Do you come in peace?”

Welcome back to the Blog, Carole! Please tell our readers a bit about yourself.

I’m a widowed mom of three adult kids. I live in a rural area in Michigan about five miles from where I grew up. I attended college for journalism and also spent some time in Mexico studying Spanish. I married the man of my dreams and had a wonderful 20 years with him. My faith is the foundation for everything I do in life.

Give us a quick taste for your latest book, The Reluctant Billionaire:

Jessica returns home after a divorce and her friend and neighbor, Liam, is there to help her pick up the pieces of her heart. Although Liam has been in love with Jessica for years, the fact that she was married meant he couldn’t show her how he felt. Now that she is single again, he decides to show her how much he cares. As their friendship grows into a romantic relationship they face many challenges, not the least of which is problems with Jessica’s ex.

What was the catalyst for your interest in writing?

We moved to a new school when I was in second grade. I didn’t adjust well and cried a lot. I saw a school counselor along with two other children. She played games with us to help us deal with our emotions. One day she told us to go home and write a story. I wrote about a pet rabbit. She had me read my story aloud to the kindergarten class. And that’s when the author in me was born.

Do you have a day job? If so, how do you find time in your day to write?

I’m a housekeeping aide for the elderly. I like serving the people I work for and it’s great exercise. I work part time, so I have free time before and after work.

Are you a night owl or morning person?

Definitely a morning person. I like to get up before four o’clock in the morning, fix a cup of coffee and enjoy the quiet time.

Do you reward yourself when a book is finished? If so, what is your favorite treat?

I used to reward myself with cake. Then I decided that wasn’t very good for me. Now I buy a package of my favorite flavor coffee.

Are you a plotter or a panster?

Definitely a panster. I have a rough outline of where I want the story to go, but it develops as I sit down at the computer and type.

Do you have a favorite author or book?

Grace Livingston Hill would be my all-time favorite author. I have a collection of 100 of her books. The Gold Shoe and The Substitute Guest top my list of favorites.

What’s next for you as an author?

I’m working on a holiday novella. I haven’t ruled out a sequel to The Reluctant Billionaire, but I have to get some of the important details figured out before I can proceed with it.

Here’s your lovely cover and a brief excerpt from the book:

“Liam’s here.” Her dad’s voice carried from the living room, jarring Jessica from her thoughts.

She took a deep breath and left her bedroom. Despite this being a fake date, there was nothing fake about the way her heart started racing when she walked into the living room and saw Liam standing there. He looked red-carpet ready in his black tux. It fit him as naturally as his work clothes or swim trunks. His white shirt set off his suntanned face with his trimmed beard.

His mouth gaped as his gaze swept over her. “Wow, you look great.” He walked over and stood in front of her.

“You’re too tall for Liam,” Julie said. “You should ditch the heels for something shorter.”

He put his hand on Jessica’s shoulder, and she blushed. “It’s okay. I like to be able to look her in the eye,” he said.

“Are you sure? I have a different pair of heels that would put me a couple of inches shorter.”

“You’re fine.” His voice was husky.

Jessica held up a necklace and a string of pearls. “I can’t decide which to wear. What do you think?”

Liam pulled a velvet box out of his pocket. Jessica gasped when he opened it, revealing a silver necklace with diamonds and sapphires. The necklace was obviously a Douglas Engstrom original and probably worth a fortune.

“Would you consider this appropriate?”

“It’s beautiful.” Jessica lightly touched the gems. “But it’s too valuable to wear.”

“I thought you could wear it in memory of Dad.”

“Oh, but—” Her gaze flew to his. “You should save this for someone special.”

His face paled, and she could tell he struggled with what to say.

Jessica’s dad stepped forward. “I think it’s a great idea. Fasten that thing around her neck.”

Liam hesitated. The velvet box moved as his hand trembled. He was nervous.

“I can do it.” Her mom took the necklace out of the box. “Turn around, Jessica.”

When Jessica turned her back to Liam and her mom, she met Julie’s enraged expression. And her dad’s gentle one. He seemed pretty pleased Liam was asking her to wear the necklace. Did her dad have an ulterior motive in mind? Was he trying to be a matchmaker? That was an unusual thing for him to do.

She walked over to the hall mirror. The reflection was of a sophisticated woman with her hair swept up and perfect makeup. Her dress shimmered in the light, and the diamonds and sapphires sparkled at her throat.

Liam appeared in the mirror behind her. His admiring gaze nearly took her breath away.

“I guess I’m ready.” She spoke a little too loudly, stepping away from the mirror and picking up her silver clutch.

The Reluctant Billionaire

With her husband’s ultimate betrayal, and the finalization of her divorce, Jessica Palmer’s dreams for her life go up in flames, leaving her devastated and lost. Now, she’s leaving Chicago and moving back into her parents’ house in an effort to rebuild her life. Longtime neighbor and friend, Liam Engstrom, is the only reason she hasn’t completely fallen apart, but the closer they get, the more she realizes the depth of his feelings.

Liam has loved Jessica since they were teens, but she never noticed him as more than a friend. Now that she’s single, he’s determined to show her how much he cares and that not all men are like her ex-husband–if she’ll let him.

Jessica is reluctant to trust again after what her husband did to her, and Liam refuses to be the rebound guy, but their attraction is hard to deny. So, together, with a little help from God, they decide to give love a chance. But between Liam’s recent inheritance and an unwanted public billionaire status that has people lining up with their hands out, and Jessica’s ex-husband monitoring her every move, their relationship is off to a rocky start. And when tragedy strikes, Liam pushes everyone away—including Jessica. Can they both learn to forgive and grow, or are they doomed to be alone?

Welcome to the Blog today, Rachelle! Please tell our readers a bit about yourself.

I like to call myself a professional daydreamer. I’m blessed to be a full-time mom and writer. Besides writing, I enjoy reading, traveling, and gardening. I love to explore new places and learn new things. Curiosity fuels me in all facets of my life.

And can you give us a teaser of what your latest book is about?

Zoey Wright returns to her hometown to work with her ex, Noah Kidwell, on a special collaboration. She needs the project to succeed so she can earn a promotion. Dealing with Noah isn’t her first choice, but she’s a professional and can handle him. Noah can’t believe she’s back and is determined to show her he’s changed. Will they be able to forgive the past and forge a new future?

What is the inspiration behind your story?

Her Unlikely Homecoming is the second in my four-book series, Home to Harmony. The story and series were inspired by a feel-good news story about a small-town in the Midwest undergoing a resurgence thanks to a group of millennials (my generation) returning to start businesses. I love second-chances and incorporated that in both the romance for this story and the community throughout the books.

Noah is an unlikely fashion mogul. Focused on growing his business to support the town, he’s also been hoping to get his high school sweetheart ex’s attention with his success. The book starts with Zoey returning to town. Noah finally has his chance to win her back. But they’ve both changed.

Who was your favorite character to create?

My favorite character was the hero’s mom. She is loosely based on a friend’s mom. In real life, she is one of the sweetest, most generous people you’ll have the pleasure to know. I hope I’ve conveyed that on the page.

How did you come up with the names of your hero and/or heroine?

I figure out how old the hero and heroine are and look up the popular names for their birth years on the Social Security website. As far as last names, I keep a list of all the characters I’ve ever created so I don’t accidentally create too many siblings/cousins across my books. I was inspired by their personalities in creating their last names. Noah Kidwell was the class clown. Zoey Wright was the studious bookworm.

Are you a plotter or a panster?

I am a plotter. When I started, I was a panster. My first couple manuscripts took over a year to write because I had no sense of what needed to happen in the story. I meandered to the end and often hit moments of writer’s block. Once I started outlining and plotting, I improved my process. On days I don’t want to write, I can still sit down and work because I’ve left notes about the next scene.

What are your three favorite books?

Jurassic Park, Anne of Green Gables, and Pride & Prejudice. Number 4 is Frankenstein and I have to add it because it was such an expected favorite the first time I read the novel during high school.

What does your family think of your writing?

My mom reads everything I write and isn’t shy about sharing her opinions. My children want to know when my books will be turned into movies (one of my huge goals). My husband and my dad are very supportive and proud.

Are you part of a writing group?

I am! I joined Chicago-North Romance Writers four years ago and being part of a community has encouraged me to keep going through tough times (and writer’s block).

Here is Rachelle’s gorgeous cover and back cover blurb:

Back Cover Blurb:

Following a tragic accident over a decade ago, Zoey Wright vowed to never move home to Harmony, Illinois. When her career stalls, however, she’s back in town and working with her high school sweetheart, Noah Kidwell, on his company’s special collaboration. Dealing with her ex is the last thing she wants to do, but she has to take the opportunity to snag a much-needed promotion. Besides, she a professional—she can handle Noah for a few days, right?.

Determined to prove he’s not the same irresponsible guy she left behind, Noah works one on one with Zoey to launch his new clothing line. Learning her true motives, he realizes she’s not the same person anymore, either, and when he confronts her, she resorts to doing what she does best—she runs. This time, though, he’s not letting her get away. Will they be able to forgive the past and forge a new future? Or is it time to move on for good?

Please share your favourite excerpt from Her Unlikely Homecoming:

With a huge purse on her shoulder and wheeling a suitcase behind her, Zoey “Always” Wright, strode in his direction.

He gaped, and his throat went dry. Shutting his mouth required some presence of mind; he could hardly process what he saw. She’d been so careful to avoid him since his brother’s funeral, that awful day forever burned in his memory with hot, sticky pain. The one who got away and swore to never see him again. The one he continued to try to impress even though he knew she’d never notice. The one now strolling toward him?

Pressing a cell phone to her ear, she turned her head.

Her auburn hair caught the sunlight. For a second, she glowed like the flashing red lights on an emergency vehicle. He should move away or at least to the side so she could pass him easily. In a decade, he never got so close to her physically. Mentally, she was as distant as always.

She met his gaze and nodded.

He gulped. At his side, he curled his fingers into fists and slowly straightened them, doing so several times as his body thrummed with memories. They’d been everything to each other until they were nothing. And it all went wrong in a flash.

“Yeah, I’m here now. Okay, great. Thanks.” She slipped her phone into her purse and stopped a few feet away.

He stared, only just stopping his instincts from turning to glance over his shoulder and see who she meant to address.

“Hi, Noah. It’s been a while.”

Shutting his mouth, he cleared his throat. “Yeah. It has.” A million other, better retorts danced on his tongue. Some cheeky, some sarcastic, but all of them with a lot more than three syllables.

“Right.” She readjusted the giant purse on her shoulder, gripping it with both hands. “Let me get to the point. I’m the liaison from Fulham’s. I’ll be working with you on your project.”

“You?” He stumbled backward. Righting himself, he locked his knees to hold his position. She almost knocked him over. This outcome was beyond the best-case scenario he imagined while signing the contract.

She nodded. “We both have a lot to lose and gain from how well this partnership proceeds. I trust you can’t build your career without professionalism. I’m here solely to focus on the task at hand. We don’t need to be involved in anything other than business, correct?”

Did he imagine the icy tone? He studied her steely expression. The woman who represented all of his regrets stood before him. She gave no hint of warmth or emotion. “Sure.” He scrubbed a hand over his face, wiping his eyes.

She extended a hand.

Frowning, he stared at the outstretched arm. Shake her hand. He reached for her and shook; her soft skin delivered a tight, firm grip and then an instantaneous release. Warmth spread through him.

“I’ll see you tomorrow morning at the store. Nine a.m.” With another nod, she gripped the suitcase behind her and continued on her way.”

I’m thrilled to have on the blog today the prolific and talented Cathe Swanson! Cathe, please tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi! After 40 years away, my husband and I recently returned to my childhood home in Minnesota. We are currently living in my parents’ basement – which isn’t as bad as it sounds – and waiting for the world to reopen. We enjoy spending time with our family – three sons, three daughters-in-love, and eight beautiful, charming, and intelligent grandchildren! I like quilting, gardening, papercrafting, birdwatching, kayaking, reading… all sorts of things! I have eight published books with three more releasing this year.

Now, please tell us the highlights of your latest book LONG SHADOWS, which came out April 6th, 2021.

Mona Vickers is forging a safe and loving home for her girls, far away from the hatred and contempt they experienced after their father’s arrest. She’ll do whatever it takes to make it work – even teaching a class that hits too close to home.

Roy Strough, director of the Unity Plenkiss Community Center, wants to help the hardworking mother who’s captured his heart, but he’s already offended her pride once and won’t do that again.

Mona’s growing faith is put to the test when one of her students is caught up in a human trafficking scheme, but the biggest challenge comes from the shadows of their past, compelling Mona to decide who she can trust with their secrets – a man who loves her and an all-powerful God.

What was the inspiration behind this story?

Many of my stories are about women picking up the pieces and making a new start in life after a tragedy or difficult situation. In Long Shadows, my heroine has moved to a new town to get a fresh start with her four girls after their father is convicted of human trafficking and drug-related crimes.

Human trafficking is happening everywhere, sometimes on a large scale by professional criminal organizations and sometimes on a more local level. It’s happening in our high schools and at all levels of society. The internet has made it easier for predators to find and “groom” their victims. It’s appallingly easy for the villains to make connections and establish relationships with young teenagers online.

So many young girls are insecure and have confused ideas about their own value as a person. They want attention – to be seen as attractive and interesting. They want love. Predators know how to take advantage of their vulnerability.

In the book, Mona teaches a class on computer safety, and I use that as a soapbox to illustrate these things.

Do you have a day job? If so, how do you find time in your day to write?

I started writing after graduating my youngest homeschooled son fourteen years ago. It was a good fit for my life. I’ve been a professional dressmaker and quilter for a long time. For nearly thirty years, I’ve been teaching quiltmaking, too. Recently, I’ve been learning to teach virtually instead of in person.

Who was your favorite character to create?

The Unity Plenkiss Community Center, the setting for almost all the Hope Again series, is found in Maly Park, a fictional Chicago neighborhood. It’s a decaying, post-industrial community. My favorite characters are the elderly people who’ve lived in Maly Park forever and the veterans who hang out at the Unity Plenkiss. In Long Shadows, my favorite is Nick Andres, a homeless Vietnam vet with PTSD and a drinking problem.

I also liked writing Roy Strough. He’s got such a passion for feeding and serving people in need! That drive leads him to take control of things, wanting to make it all better. That’s what got him into trouble with Mona. He just wanted to help, and she thought he saw her as a charity case. Not true… he thinks she’s AMAZING.

How did you come up with the names of your hero and/or heroine?

Often, names just come to me when I imagine the character. Because names are chosen by parents, they tend to reflect the personality of the parents more than the individual. Roy’s full name is Royal. His brothers are Marcus and Justice. His sister, Carrie, is really Charity – and she hates that name.

Tiana and Jasmine were named after Disney princesses. Don’t blame me… their mother did it.

I don’t know why Mona is named Mona. She was just “born” that way.

When I need names for secondary characters, I often consult the social security index. If I need a woman born in 1926, I can find popular names for that year.

Surnames are harder, but sometimes they reflect the demographics of the community. Maly Park is a fictional Chicago neighborhood. It’s similar to Hegewisch, which has a large Polish ethnic community. So, Mona’s landlady is named Wanda Jowlaski.

Are you a plotter or a panster?

I do best with an outline, but sometimes the story gets away from me. The best scenes happen organically. In Long Shadows, Mona gets a broken nose in the middle of a church service. Roy tries to help her, and that scene just flowed out. It never occurred to me to write a broken nose into the outline.

Are you part of a writing group?

I am a member of the local and national American Christian Fiction Writers Groups.

Who was the first person you allowed to read your completed book?

I have a team of five readers who read the book as I write it. When it’s finished, it goes to my sister and then to the regular editor.

What book or author has inspired you the most?

Chautona Havig has been a great inspiration to me. She’s the one who encouraged me to start writing seriously back in 2010, and she’s been helping me ever since.

I love her books! She writes in (almost) every genre. Her voice is clean and humorous.

OPENING SCENE:

Mona searched the gymnasium—hundreds of grubby, uncontrolled children—for her girls. She’d put them in lavender today, but the color seemed to be a popular choice, and the afterschool program was a madhouse.

“Mama.”

The word was just a whisper above the din. Pink. The girls were in bright pink today. How could she have forgotten that, after the frantic search for the baby’s pink leggings this morning? She reached out for Tiana but stopped at the sight of the girl’s upturned face. Blue eyeshadow? And mascara?

“Where did you get that makeup?” Mona winced at the sound of her shrill voice, more demanding than she liked to use with the girls. She took a deep breath, eased it out silently and smiled at her daughter. “Goodness, honey, look at you!”

Tiana ducked her chin, not fooled by the belated admiration. “Miss Evie said it would be all right.”

It wasn’t. Mona located the teacher, who stroked blush on the plump cheeks of a blonde student while a crowd of enthusiastic girls made helpful suggestions. Some already wore colorful makeup, and the others appeared to be waiting for their turn. Abbie was among the latter.

Pulling the reluctant Tiana behind, Mona strode toward the group. She glared at the woman, who had picked up an oversized tube of mascara. Was she really using the same mascara for all the girls? Hadn’t she heard of bacteria? Basic sanitary procedures? Mona seethed. Mascara brushes could spread pinkeye faster than shared combs could spread lice.

Her tote slid from her shoulder to her elbow as Mona reached for her oldest daughter, and she lurched forward with the weight of the books. The girls scattered in alarm. Abbie slumped.

“Mama! I can’t leave yet. Miss Evie’s doing face painting. It’s almost my turn.”

“Face painting is butterflies and rainbows. This is not face painting.” Mona considered Tiana’s iridescent eyelids. “Well, it may be painting faces, but not a nice kind. Not appropriate for little girls.”

The teacher ignored her and moved on to lipstick. A shared lipstick. Mona hitched her bag back up to her shoulder and drew the girls toward the door.

“Where’s Jasmine?”

“She’s with the little kids.” Abbie pointed. “The kindergarten kids.”

“Why isn’t she with you?” asked Mona. “I’d prefer that you all stay together.” It was more than a preference. She’d specifically directed Abbie to stay with her sisters.

“She doesn’t like us.”

Mona stopped and stared at her daughter. “Doesn’t like you?”

Abbie fidgeted. “Well, she doesn’t like the other girls.”

“What other girls?” Mona narrowed her eyes. “Are you not including her?”

“I do include her, but the other girls say she’s a baby.”

“A baby!” Mona heard the strident note in her voice and tried to modulate it. “Why is she with the kindergarten group? Tiana’s with you, and she’s younger than Jasmine.”

“I’m in K5, but I’m six,” Tiana said. “Jasmine’s in first grade, but she’s seven.”

Mona blinked at the child in momentary confusion and then returned to her interrogation. “You didn’t call your sister a baby, did you, Abbie?”

“No! But Claire and Summer were doing it, and then Winnie did, and Jasmine started crying and ran off to tattle on them, and then she stayed with the kindergarten kids.”

“You didn’t go to check on her? You were supposed to stay together!”

“But Claire and Summer asked me to play with them, and they’ve never asked me before,” Abbie said. “I really like them a lot, Mama. They’re popular.”

“They called your sister a baby and made her cry! That’s mean! They were bullying her!” Mona spotted Jasmine at a table in the far corner. Hiding? “Jasmine!”

The girl jumped up, knocking the chair away behind her, and pelted toward them. Mona stooped to lift her.

“Hey! Are you okay?”

Jasmine wrapped her legs around Mona’s waist—something she hadn’t done in years. She didn’t answer, but the tremors of her thin body conveyed more than words.

Mona gritted her teeth. Never. They were never coming back here. There had to be better after-school programs or some other babysitting option.

“Let’s get your coats and backpacks.”

The girls collected their belongings, wary under their mother’s grim resolve. Mona wished she could think of something reassuring to say. She wasn’t mad at them. She was mad at the school. Mad in general. Worried. Discouraged. Afraid.

What’s next for you as an author?

2021 is my year to clean up my library.

My first published book was Snow Angels, Book 2 in the Hope Again series. It came out in a Christmas collection. Then I published Baggage Claim, Book 1 in that series. Then we moved, and I didn’t get another book out till Christmas again. Hope for the Holidays was Book 4 in that series. Then – SQUIRREL! – I started a new series. And another one.

Long Shadows is Book 3 in the Hope Again series. I’m currently working on Home Run, which is Book 5, for a September 21st release. Book 6 – the last book in the series – will come out in this year’s Christmas Lights Collection. It was a messy way to write a series!

Matched Hearts, previously included in the CrossRoads Collection, Betwixt Two Hearts. releases on June 1st.

Potato Flake Christmas, from last year’s Christmas Lights Collection, will be released on July 1st.

On October 5th, I have something fun and new – Murder at the Empire is a 1920’s mystery novel. It’s part of Celebrate Lit’s Ever After collection of 1920’s mysteries inspired by classic fairy tales.

And on October 15th, you can get the 6th annual Christmas Lights Collection, which includes the last book (finally!) in my Hope Again series.

It’s going to be a busy year! I’m glad to be wrapping up the stories of the people of the Unity Plenkiss Community Center. I’ve become very attached to them. Next year, I’ll be working on my two other series, finishing up a women’s fiction book for the Mosaic Collection, and writing another book for Celebrate Lit.

Happy Book Birthday!

As part of the A Promise to Keep Book Birthday Bash tour, I’ll be celebrating the 1-year anniversary of the book’s release.

I asked Melony to share with us what is was like to be a 2020 debut (pandemic and all) and asked her what’s next for her.

There will be a giveaway so make sure you enter to win a $5 Amazon gift card. It will run from Jan 18 – Jan 22. The winner will be announced the week of Jan 25th.

Take it away, Melony!

Hello Laurie, and Laurie’s readers!

Thank you for having me today and celebrating the 1-year book birthday of A Promise to Keep with us!

What was it like to be a 2020 Debut author? Let’s just say it wasn’t at all how I envisioned it would be. Other than the thrill of opening my brand-new box of books and sniffing the pages, things were different, and that was for a few reasons.

First off, although A Promise to Keep released on Jan 21, our big kick off was delayed due to a snowstorm. Quite a few of the scenes in the book were set in Niagara Falls, Ontario and Niagara-on-the-Lake, so the plan was to go down, eat at the restaurant that Michael and Savannah had their first “not-date” and to film some live footage from some of the other locations featured in the book. But, no. Because there was a snowstorm.

“We’ll postpose that to when the weather improves,” we said, not knowing that by the time the weather improved, COVID-19 would cause shutdowns and travel restrictions.

I got good at baking bread and pretzel buns. I even tried making macarons, which are quite difficult to perfect. Zoom has become a thing I do now, and our cats are more than happy to have us around the house all the time.

I can just imagine the meowing that will happen when everyone goes back to in class school and university campus.

So here we are, a year later having survived all that and anxiously awaiting the vaccine and the return to some sort of newer, new normal.

This year came with some challenges in marketing and promoting books. Bookstores were no longer allowing browsing, authors had to learn to ZOOM and move promotion online.

I think the most challenging thing was a lack of focus and creativity. I’d love to say book two is hot on the heels of this book’s birthday, but the reality is that for the first few months of the pandemic, my mind was occupied with getting my teens adjusted to online learning and readjusting everyone’s study spaces and schedules.

No longer did I have a space to myself to write in. And it wasn’t safe to go write at my nearest coffee shop. My on-site research was no longer allowed, and travel to potential locations was out of the question. We made the most of it, knowing that eventually it would all end. By the time my creativity did return, it was the start of a new year, a second wave of lockdown and a remaining feeling of thankfulness that this will all be over soon.

However, all is not lost. I was able to write a short story for StoryTimeForGrownups which aired on You Tube on Christmas Eve. You can find it here. It’s called, CHRISTMAS EVE COOKIES.

It is an excerpt from a longer story, which will be free for all my newsletter subscribers sometime this year. I’m finishing that up now. I hope you enjoy the narration by the lovely Jacqueline Belle.

Thank you, Laurie, for having me!

Jason’s eyes narrowed and he held Stephanie’s gaze. He fished his keys out of his pocket and handed them to her. She took them from his hand and offered a polite smile. Stephanie rose, tossed Kimberley’s resume on the desk, and tried to brush past him. Her breath caught when he blocked her with a gentle, but firm hand on her wrist. The tender touch of his thumb all but stole her composure. Her gaze focused on the fingers wrapped around her wrist and journeyed up his arm until she met eyes pooled with concern.

SNOWBOUND IN WINTERBERRY FALLS by Ann Brodeur

Unwrapping their past – one secret at a time.

Owning her own PR firm is all reporter Stephanie Clark wants for Christmas, but the idea of running a prestigious election campaign in the country’s capital throws her stomach into knots. A last minute vacation road trip to focus and seek God’s direction for her life ends up in disaster when she gets caught in the worst snowstorm to hit Vermont in over a decade, crashing her into a small town and the one person she’d rather forget.

Former photojournalist Jason Miller hadn’t planned on being solely responsible for saving his family business from financial ruin. He’s barely keeping the newspaper in print, his News Editor has gone AWOL during the town’s most celebrated holiday festival, and reports of missing Christmas decorations have everyone on edge.

When a desperate knock at the newsroom door brings a ghost from Christmas past back into his life, can Jason make up for his prior behavior without breaking his promise to Stephanie’s father? Will Stephanie’s quest to solve the town’s Christmas caper—and uncover the truth about Jason’s disappearance—cost her everything she’s ever wanted?

Releases November 6, 2020 by Anaiah Press

Here’s an excerpt:

Jason’s eyes narrowed and he held Stephanie’s gaze. He fished his keys out of his pocket and handed them to her. She took them from his hand and offered a polite smile. Stephanie rose, tossed Kimberley’s resume on the desk, and tried to brush past him. Her breath caught when he blocked her with a gentle, but firm hand on her wrist. The tender touch of his thumb all but stole her composure. Her gaze focused on the fingers wrapped around her wrist and journeyed up his arm until she met eyes pooled with concern.

She swallowed hard, wishing strength into her weak petition. “Please let me go.” Tears pricked her eyes as she stared at him.

A nerve pulsed in his cheek, and Stephanie’s breaths grew raspy.

One minute more and she wouldn’t have the strength to leave.

“Please.” Her voice cracked, her eyes pleading with him.

Jason nodded and his shoulders heaved as he exhaled.

Not a moment too soon, he released his grip, his touch still burning a memory into her skin.

Stephanie raced from his office, her cheeks hot as her resolve to resist his charms weakened.

Why, oh why was she here?

Welcome to the blog, Jennifer! Tell us a little bit about yourself:

My husband, Ronnie, and I will have been married for twenty-six years this November. Wow – time sure flies! When we met, we were both attending our church’s singles ministry. That next year, I was asked to direct the Easter Passion Play so I had a lot of extras to recruit. I started with the singles department and asked Ronnie to be one of the Roman soldiers. It was a life changing experience, not only to direct but to also date and get to know my future husband. For the past 5 years, we have been host parents to several international students that attended the Christian school. It was such a privilege to be able to parent these boys and see them mature into the young men they are today. They have become the children of my heart.

Describe your story in 5 sentences or less:

The Mistletoe Contract is a sweet, contemporary, faith-filled marriage of convenience story that takes place in the small, fictional southern town of Providence NC. Nathan Rutledge needs a wife to assume leadership at his family’s company, Rutledge Corporate Developers, Incorporated. Meredith Mitchell is the forensic accountant sent to RCD, Inc. to scour their financial transactions. Meredith is the last person Nate ever expected to see again, and Meredith? Well let’s just say she and Nate have history that causes the sparks to fly as they work to uncover the embezzler. And when Nate and Meredith enter into a marriage of convenience, is it an answer to both their prayers or a recipe for disaster?

What is the inspiration behind your story?

I love all things Christmas – I always have. We used to live in a small town and every year, we would go select our Christmas tree and then Dad would cut it down. Growing up, there was no other time of year that was as magical as Christmas. A couple of years ago, I attended a writing camp and while there, met a couple of other writers with whom I am now friends. When I got back, Hallmark had started playing their Christmas movies. Well, I also like the reality show, Married at First Sight, where the participants are matched but don’t meet their spouse until their wedding day. I’ve read a lot of fake marriage/fiancé/boyfriend stories. I started to ask some “what if” questions. Such as, what if the characters were really married? That would create a whole new dynamic that the couple would have to work through. I also wanted to include some local areas of interest. I included a scene from McAdenville, NC – they call their little town “Christmas Town USA”. The entire town is decorated with lights and lawn displays, in fact, the entire town looks like something straight out of a Hallmark movie!

What was the catalyst for your interest in writing?

I’ve always loved to read, even as a little girl. Over twenty years ago, I noticed that there weren’t a whole lot of Christian authors out in the marketplace, except for a lot of historical fiction authors with a few contemporary authors here and there. I stumbled upon Terri Blackstock’s writing and loved the themes she brought into her suspense stories. When I found a writer I liked, I purchased their stories and eagerly awaited their next release. But it always seemed it took forever for the next book to release. And when Kindle and digital books came along, I downloaded a lot of books. And I mean a LOT! And truthfully, some of them weren’t very good. I knew there had to be a specific structure/outline to writing a book. But where would I find it? And then life happened and so many things were going on in my personal life until fifteen years passed. But God wouldn’t let me rest. He put this desire in me to write. Six years ago I did a Google search on how to write a novel. The first response was Novel Academy/My Book Therapy’s website. My stomach was in knots as I signed up for the Story Crafter course taught by Susan May Warren. And I guess you could say the rest is history.

Who was your favorite character to create?

I think it’s a toss-up between Meredith and Nate’s sister, Tori. Both of these women have a lot of layers to them. But, I really love Tori’s personality. She’s a secondary character but she is fun, quirky, and has a depth to her I didn’t realize when I started writing this book. She hides her hurts behind this bubbly mask of “everything is great!” when in reality, she’s been deeply hurt. Eventually, I think I’m going to have to write her story. She’s just not been very “talkative” yet.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

I’m definitely a plotter! In my job, I’m always making lists so this habit carries over to my writing as well. I have to know which direction my story is going or else I’ll get lost in the weeds, so to speak. Sometimes, my characters might take a detour but that can be a good thing because it takes the story in a slightly different direction or adds an extra element of tension to the scene.

What does your family think of your writing?

My husband has been very supportive of me. It’s been a long-held dream come true for me to have a story published. All my family members are very excited to see my book in print. It’s been a long road to publication, with lots of struggles and doubts, but my family has been there for me the entire time, cheering me on.

Are you part of a writing group?

Yes, there is a group of 4 of us here in the Charlotte area that meet once a month for critiques. We met at Word Weavers and at the Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference. Now, we meet virtually once a month to offer critiques, brainstorm or discuss social media and what we can do to boost our numbers. I’m also a member of My Book Therapy/Novel Academy.

What’s next for you as an author?

Right now, I’m working a couple of different stories. I’m editing a completed manuscript and hope to have that in the editor’s hands in the next couple of weeks. I’ve also plotted out a new story, set in the same small southern town as The Mistletoe Contract. I’m hoping to write most of that during the months of November and December, with some heavy editing over the Christmas holidays.

That sounds wonderful! Here’s your lovely book cover, blurb, and a short excerpt:

He needs a wife. She needs money. Is their modern-day marriage an answer to their prayers or a disaster waiting to happen?

Confirmed bachelor, Nathan Rutledge shut his heart to romance when he was forced to break the heart of the only woman he ever truly loved. Now, with his father’s retirement from the family conglomerate, the torch has been passed to him. But there are two problems—first, he needs a wife in order to take over the family business. Second, someone has been embezzling company funds. With the pressure mounting, and time expiring to find both a wife he can trust and the thief, Nate needs a Christmas miracle.

Forensic Accountant, Meredith Mitchell’s life is in a shambles. Her mother needs a lifesaving transplant, Mom’s medical bills have bankrupted Meredith’s meager savings, and she’s sold everything of value, but it’s still not enough. To make matters worse, she’s now tasked with discovering accounting errors for a new client—none other than Nathan Rutledge—the same man who gave her a broken heart for Christmas eight years ago.

Meredith wants to run. Nate wants the chance to right his wrongs. So, naturally, when he proposes a modern-day marriage of convenience, she balks at the idea. But he desperately needs a wife, and she really needs the money he offers. Is this the answer to her prayers? Or will this mutually beneficial arrangement re-open old wounds that can’t be healed?

The excerpt:

Meredith closed the door with a soft click and propped herself against the wall. Tilting her head up, she released a huge sigh. She hated lying to her mother. Weariness settled deep in her bones. Her to-do list for the wedding grew with each passing hour. She had a lot to accomplish between now and Friday morning.

“Penny for your thoughts?”

Meredith’s eyes popped open. “Nate! You scared me!” Facing off with her fiancé, she straightened her spine. “What’re you doing here?”

His back against the wall, he crossed his ankles. Even after working all day, Nate still appeared fresh. When she glanced at her gray dress pants, the red sauce stain from her rushed dinner glared at her. She was wrinkly… and frumpy.

Nate frowned, his gaze roving over her.

Meredith moved her purse from her shoulder and held it in front of the stain. “I’m sorry. That was unkind.”

“I didn’t mean to intrude.”

She pulled herself up to her full height. “You didn’t. It’s… I didn’t expect to see you.” At least, not until their wedding day, giving her a couple of days to steel her emotions against his all-American boy-next-door charm. Why did he have to ruin her well-thought-out plan? His nearness sent her pulse into overdrive.

Nate turned toward her and rested one hand on the wall above her head. He was so close she saw the golden flecks ringing his pupils. “Can’t a guy see his fiancée before the wedding?” The low timbre of Nate’s voice raised goose bumps on her arms, and her heart rate kicked up another notch.

Butterflies fluttered in her stomach, and she licked her dry lips before her gaze settled on his mouth. “Yeah, sure.”

Nate’s free hand came up and traced a line down her cheek. Meredith closed her eyes.

She had to stop this flood of emotion. Why was he doing this to her? His spicy cologne wafted between them. Comforted her. Shoot. Nate smelled good.

“Nate… please… someone will see us.” Meredith swallowed hard, and her breaths came in short gasps.

“So?”

“This is supposed to be a business relationship. No funny business. You promised.”

Meredith scooted out from under his arm and hurried down the tiled hallway, her steps echoing in the empty space. She needed air. And personal space. “Is there a reason you stopped by?”

Nate fell in step beside Meredith. She scampered down the hall to the elevator bank.

Nate touched her arm, and they stood facing each other in front of the elevator. “Have a cup of coffee with me?” His blue eyes held a glimmer of amusement.

Shock or maybe desire rooted Meredith’s feet to the floor.

The elevator door opened, and two nurses in scrubs emerged. Meredith entered and jabbed the first-floor button. When she looked up into the polished steel doors, she met Nate’s steady gaze. Turning to face him, she crossed her arms. “Why, Nate? What are you trying to do to me? We have an agreement.”

Nate matched her stance, a smirk on his face. “I have no clue what you’re talking about.”

Meredith snorted, and her lips stretched into a sneer. “Oh, come on. You cannot seriously be this clueless.”

He stepped closer, his hands in his pockets, causing her to back up a couple of steps. “This attraction—you’re not immune to it, either, are you?”

Shaking her head, Meredith braced her back against the elevator car. “No, you’re wrong. This isn’t the type of relationship you’re thinking about.” She bit her lower lip.

Nate’s warm breath whispered against her ear, and chill bumps raced up and down her arms. “But it could be. Think of how much fun we’d have.”

His nearness muddled her mind. But she was older now. Wiser. Fool me once and all that. She’d be doggoned if he’d fool her again with his sweet talk. Before she answered, the elevator doors opened with a whoosh. Saved by the bell.

Meredith darted into the parking deck. “I don’t think so,” she said over her shoulder. “I’ll see you tomorrow at 4:00 to finalize the details.”

Welcome to the blog, Christina! Tell us a little bit about yourself:

A member of the American Christian Fiction Writers, Christina Sinisi writes stories about families, both the broken and blessed. Her works include a semi-finalist in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award Contest and the American Title IV Contest in which she appeared in the top ten in the Romantic Times magazine. Her published books include The Christmas Confusion and the upcoming Sweet Summer, the first two books in the Summer Creek Series, as well as Christmas On Ocracoke. By day, she is a psychology professor and lives in the Lowcountry of South Carolina with her husband and two children and cat Chessie Mae.

Describe your story in 5 sentences or less:

Reeling from the upheaval of a failed marriage, Annie Hanahan is desperate for a new start—and when she inherits a cottage on Ocracoke Island, she may finally get it. Without a second thought, she packs up and leaves everything behind: her first name, her job, and her ex-husband. But when she arrives in the Outer Banks, she finds the island—and her promised refuge—ravaged by Hurricane Dorian. As a contractor who has given so much of his time to helping Ocracoke recover, it surprises no when Trey Kingsley offers to help the beautiful newcomer, but something is holding her back. Life keeps throwing them together, though, or perhaps God’s hand is giving them a nudge. Will a little bit of divine intervention be enough for a Merry Christmas on Ocracoke?

What is the inspiration behind your story?

My sister and her husband bought a vacation home on Hatteras Island. The Outer Banks had always been on my bucket list to visit, but this past year was my first time to go. Then, while we were there for New Year’s, we took a day trip to Ocracoke Island. It was like visiting a different world. Plus, the mountains of debris and the boarded-up shops touched my heart and I wanted to write a story for them.

What was the catalyst for your interest in writing?

I have always wanted to write–since I learned how in elementary school. I have always written, except sometimes it was not fiction.

Do you have a day job? If so, how do you find time in your day to write?

I’m a professor and department chair of psychology at a small college in Charleston, South Carolina. During the semester, I write at night, after I’m done with grading. Thank goodness for summers and all the various breaks we’re blessed to have or I’d be restricted to the one or two pages I can barely crank out at night. On the other hand, during those crazy busy times like exams, I give myself permission not to write. My creative well refills and I’m back at it as soon as I can.

Are you a night owl or morning person?

I’m a morning person, but I do what I must.

Are you part of a writing group?

Yes, I’m a member of our local American Christian Fiction Writers group here in Charleston–which we just started this year. And yes, we didn’t know it, but what a terrible year to begin. On the other hand, the support is wonderful. If any writers out there in the eastern part of South Carolina would like to join, we’d love to have you.

Who was the first person you allowed to read your completed book?

I think it might be better phrased, who did I beg to read it? My writer friend, Dianne Miley, gave me wonderful and needed feedback first. I find that I’m never sure whether it’s “good enough” when I finish a manuscript. Thank you, Dianne!

What’s next for you as an author?

Last year, I published my first Christmas novella, The Christmas Confusion. When my mentor read the manuscript, she said she wanted to read the sisters’ stories. So, next summer, Sweet Summer, the youngest sister, Shelby’s story, will be told. Right now, I’m writing the middle sister, Emma’s story, Why They Call It Falling. I hope to complete that one by the end of the year!

Reeling from the upheaval of a failed marriage, Annie Hanahan is desperate for a new start—and when she inherits a cottage on Ocracoke Island, she may finally get it. Without a second thought, she packs up and leaves everything behind: her first name, her job, and her ex-husband, because more than anything, she wants to get her son away. Maybe now she can get her son away from his father’s partying and neglectful ways. But when she arrives in the Outer Banks, she finds the island—and her promised refuge—ravaged by Hurricane Dorian.

When their parents died in a tragic car accident, Trey Kingsley dropped out of college to raise his sister. Now that she’s grown and moved away, it’s his turn to find a life of his own. As a contractor who has given so much of his time to helping Ocracoke recover from the devastation of Hurricane Dorian, it surprises no one when he offers to help the beautiful newcomer, but something is holding her back. Life keeps throwing them together, though, or perhaps God’s hand is giving them a nudge. Will a little bit of divine intervention be enough for a Merry Christmas on Ocracoke?

Excerpt:

“You, too. Welcome to Hatteras.” The girl was already disappearing into the back room and turning off lights.

Annie scanned what seemed like a deserted island at this time of night. Charleston was on the coast, but this was a different world. There was a stoplight a few blocks away, and a few shops had interior lights glowing, but overall, there was a sense of being at the end of the world.

And Ocracoke was south, farther away from everything.

She breathed in air pregnant with salt and moisture and let it go. James would be safe in the SUV while she dragged their suitcases upstairs. He slept with his neck at a jagged angle, his forehead heavy against the side of the car seat. Tenderness stopped her in her tracks for a minute, or maybe it was sheer exhaustion.

The sound of tires bouncing over the speed bump at the entrance to the motel broke her out of her reverie. The man driving the extended cab monstrosity lifted his chin in greeting and parked a couple of spots down the line.

Annie ducked her head and gathered James’s things. She lingered for a few seconds until she heard the truck door slam shut, waiting for the man to go inside and disappear. Hoisting the heavy diaper bag on one shoulder, she juggled her purse and overnight bag on the other.

“Hey, let me help you with that.”

The deep baritone caught her off guard, and she did a little dance, startled.

“Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you. I just wondered if you could use some help carrying stuff. Promise I’m not a creep. I could just carry your bags to the top of the stairs, drop them off.”

Annie narrowed her eyes. “How would you know my room is at the top of the stairs?”

The man leaned against the cab of his truck, jean-clad legs outlined by the waving street lamps. He held out two hands, palms up in surrender. “Nothing diabolical. When I checked in earlier, the girl said the only room left after that was next to mine. Yeah, I know, she should never have said that, but she did, and she’s young.”

Annie’s whole head dropped in shock. “She did what? I can’t believe.”

The diaper bag slipped off her shoulder, and she almost lost the bag. The man crossed the gap between them with a few fast steps and caught the bag before it hit the ground. “Here, let me get that. I saw the car seat earlier, so I’m betting you want to get that little one to bed.”

“Earlier?”

“Yeah, has your foot dried yet?”

“I’m sorry?” Annie knew she was tired, but this man couldn’t be the one who’d come to her rescue earlier. “That was you, back in Florence?”

“Yeah, thought I’d get that out there. The coincidence is crazy. And I promise you that I didn’t follow you all the way here. I have a construction company, do work out here. Plus, I got here before you did.”

Annie swayed where she stood. “Okay. This is weird. What’s your name? Did you say?”

“Trey, Trey Kingsley,” he said and shifted bags to stick out a hand. “I’m working on a rental house, checked into the motel long term while I’m working. Jenny’s just got comfortable with me since I’m almost a local now.”

“Nice to meet you, Trey.” She shook his hand, barely making physical contact. She’d play nice, get her stuff to her door, and then triple lock it with a chair propped against the handle. “Um, thank you for the help.”

“You’re welcome.” He shifted the bags and stepped out of the way, waiting for her to retrieve James. “Normally, when one person gives their name, the other returns the favor.”

“Oh, I’m sorry. I must be more tired than I thought. That last part of the drive was a killer.” She blinked at her horrible choice of words. She babbled to cover up her nervousness, which never worked. “I’ve never been here before, so it was actually a little bit terrifying, no streetlights, and the ocean right on the other side of the dunes like that.”

Trey chuckled. “So, I don’t get your name? That’s okay, I get it. You don’t know me, midnight, cheap motel.”

Annie’s mind blanked, and she stared at the hollows in his cheeks, shadowed in the dim street lights, and beyond all reason, she trusted him. “Sorry. Yes, all those things, but no. My name’s Annie.”

“Good to meet you, Annie.” Trey gave a nod as if to emphasize the point and led the way up the metal steps, his work boots thudding with each riser. “I’m staying here because any remodeling work needs to be done in the off season. The rental houses are pretty booked up here in the summer.”

Annie hesitated, not taking the leap to tell him why she was here on this chilly November night. “Well, this is my room. You can just drop the stuff there.”

Trey grinned, and now in the brighter light, she got the full impact of his dark red hair and bright blue eyes. “Well, it was nice to meet you, Annie Hanahan. If you need anything, I’m right next door in 202. Otherwise, I’ll see you at breakfast?”

Annie fought to keep her eyelids from closing on her as she stood in place, hand clutching the doorknob. “I don’t know if I’ll make it. I may be sleeping in for a change.”

Trey nodded, exuding charm and maybe mischief. “Well, on that note, I’ll be heading away from your door. Good night, Annie.”

Annie found herself alternating between staring at James’s diaper bag and watching Trey walk away. She’d had enough southern charm to last her a lifetime, but it didn’t stop her from enjoying the view.
