Northern Hearts (Heroes of the Tundra Book 2) is my Christmas novella set in the real-life town of Churchill, Manitoba, Canada. It’s called the Polar Bear Capitol of the World. I set my entire series there, and my husband and I flew up in 2019 so that I could do proper research on the town and its polar bear research facilities.

I set this story during the Christmas in between Northern Deception (Book 1) and Northern Protector (Book 3). The inspiration for the story came to me out of the blue—I love it when my brain and creativity strikes like that—because I was thinking about family situations and secrets.

I had the vision of a rich young woman with every advantage she could have in her life, but still yearning for more. And her family held a long, dark secret in the past. She’s about to find out about a family member she had never known existed before, and how that person had been following her life from afar.

The hero is the opposite. He’s grown up without a proper family in the foster care system and the unknown family member of the heroine has been a stand-in mother figure for him. When the hero and heroine meet and are forced to work together for thirty days to meet the legal requirements of the family member’s will, they have to examine what their relationships mean to them and learn to work together.

Being a romance, they will fall in love, but I include some real-life festivities that take place in Churchill, and some traditions that I wish I’d done myself over the years. I believe that family traditions keep memories alive and serve the purpose of keeping families intact, especially when children are young and growing up. Once they’re grown up, some traditions need to change to facilitate the changes in the family make-up, for example, adult children marrying and the “family” enlarging.

Like the Sabbath being made for man, not man for the Sabbath, as Jesus taught us, I think that family traditions like every person being present at Christmas dinner when that may not be feasible, need to be looked at in the light of love and common sense. Christmas dinners may need to be done rotationally. Traditions may need to grow and change as the years go by.

That doesn’t mean that our Christmas excitement and celebrations of our one true King shouldn’t take place or be enjoyed. They just may look different from year to year, and that’s all right. The true meaning of Christmas is that Jesus is the Light of the World and our Saviour. I wish you all a blessed Christmas!

Here is a quick excerpt from Chapter 1 of NORTHERN HEARTS:

Wild and dangerous and the town has nothing of significance…

With that ringing in her ears, she grabbed her soft-sided hot pink suitcase and hauled it upright beside her. The clock read 9:45 a.m., so she was right on time. Her ride should be here any minute. Gazing around the tiny, one-room airport, she noticed a twelve-foot-high polar bear skin hung spread out in a wooden display case. The sheer height and width of it gave her pause.

“It’s nothing but snow, ice, and polar bears,” her dad had said. She rolled her luggage over to the huge case and checked out the five-inch claws on the paws of the polar bear skin. Its teeth were three inches, at least, bared permanently in a snarl. The entire fur from side to side had to be four feet wide.

She drew in a breath to calm her nerves and turned to read the huge blue and white sign on the wall.

“Welcome to Churchill, Manitoba–Polar Bear Country,” it read.

“NEVER–

Go beyond a polar bear alert warning sign

Approach or feed a bear for any reason

Walk at night after 10 p.m.

“Always be alert and aware of your surroundings,” said a deep voice from behind her left shoulder.

Adrenaline rippled through her veins. Kali gasped and jumped. “Excuse me?”

“Sorry.” The man who’d spoken loomed over her. His fur-lined green parka hood, which he shoved back out of the way, framed his brown hair and beard scruff. His brown, almost black, eyes didn’t look the least bit sorry. His thick, longish hair poked up in an unruly fashion and curled around his ears. He grinned, showing white, even teeth she couldn’t help but stare at for a second. Handsome. Unbelievably handsome.

“Sorry, that’s the next line on the sign—you are reading the sign, aren’t you?”

“Yes, I mean, I was… I just…” Kali stopped. Get a hold of yourself! You’re babbling.

“The most important thing to remember is that bears can be in town at any time of day or night,” he quoted from the sign. “I’m assuming you’re Miss Kali McIntyre?”

She drew herself up to her entire 5’ 1” height. “You can drop the Miss. And yes, I’m Kali McIntyre.” If this guy was her ride, she’d just hit the lottery.

He drew off his enormous fur-trimmed gauntlet and thrust his right-hand forwards to shake her hand. “Excellent. I’m Jake Miller, from The Great Northern Lodge.”

Marcelle Dubé grew up near Montreal. After trying out a number of different provinces – not to mention Belgium – she settled in the Yukon, where people outnumber the carnivores, but not by much. Undaunted, she started her family and now has two beautiful daughters: Rotten Daughter #1 and Rotten Daughter #2. She has worked as an editorial assistant, a newspaper librarian, an accountant, a military policewoman and a communications officer. All things considered, she prefers sitting in a warm, comfy room and making stories up. She also writes under the pen name of Emma Faraday.

Her novels have been published by Carina Press and Falcon Ridge Publishing. Her short fiction has appeared in On Spec Magazine; Polaris: A Celebration of Polar Science; Open space: A Canadian Anthology of Fantastic Fiction; and Challenging Destiny 25, among other places. Polaris received the 2007 Canadian Science in Society Book Award and was a finalist for the Aurora Award, Canada’s reader’s choice award for science fiction and fantasy. Most recently, she received the Crime Writers of Canada Award of Excellence for her short story, Cold Wave, published in Crime Wave: A Canada West Anthology.

Marcelle, welcome to the blog today! I’m thrilled to have you here. Please tell us some more about yourself:

I’ve been writing for ::mumble:: years and have published 14—about to be 15—novels and over 30 short stories. My most popular novels are in the Mendenhall Mystery series, which features Chief of Police Kate Williams and her small-town police force in Mendenhall, Manitoba. But I also love writing fantasy and science fiction, and alternate history. I’ve managed to combine most of these loves in the A’lle Chronicles Mystery series, in which the A’lle crash-landed on Earth in 1711 and have been trying to fit in ever since. The Chronicles feature Constance A’lle, the first A’lle Investigator for Lower Canada and her efforts to uncover a conspiracy that is killing A’lle.

I’m enjoying your Mendenhall series but have yet to start the A’lle Chronicles. They sound fascinating though and I do love alternate history books. Aliens landing in Canada in 1711 could explain a lot of things, lol!

Your latest book, Identity Withheld, just released from Falcon Publishing. Can you give us a teaser?

Identity Withheld: At 23, Cleo wants a permanent home. Let her parents keep wandering if they want. She’s done. Then someone rams her parents’ car into the river and just like that, the past has caught up to them.

What is the inspiration behind your story?

An idea popped into my head one day: what would you do if you suspected someone you loved of doing something bad? What if that someone was your parents?

How did you come up with the names of your hero and/or heroine?

Cleo’s name just popped into my head, as if she’d been waiting for me to ask. Hugh’s name took a while longer to figure out, but when I came up with the combination Hugh Ondrak, it stuck.

Are you part of a writing group?

Not currently. I used to be, a long time ago, but when I started concentrating on novels, I found a writing group no longer worked for me. I couldn’t send in a chapter at a time and wait for comments before moving on. It would have taken me three years to finish a first draft, not to mention how disruptive it would have been to the flow of the story. A writing group worked really well for me when I was doing mostly short stories. And I learned a great deal from the other writers in the group.

Now I have a trusted first reader, another writer, who is very good at the stuff in which I’m weak. When I’ve addressed the gaping plot holes that she points out, I send the revised version to another reader, who is not a writer, to get a reader’s perspective of the story.

Do you experience writer’s block? What do you do to get through it?

I’ve gone through fallow periods in my writing. Sometimes it’s because I’m stuck in the story (that’s the problem with ‘pantsing’) and I have to wait for the boys in the basement to finish the heavy lifting so I can keep going. When that happens, I work on something else until they’re ready for me.

Sometimes, however, it’s because I’ve experienced a ‘life roll.’ When my dad died, I wasn’t able to write for almost a year and a half. Then Covid hit, and I couldn’t seem to put one word up on the screen. So, I waited. I did other creative things that helped refill my empty well. And sure enough, the writing came back.

And we’re so glad it did! What’s next for you as an author?

I seem to be in a very creative place right now. I finished Identity Withheld this year, as well as the sixth book in my Mendenhall Mystery series, which I hope to release early next year. As well, I’ve written half a dozen short stories in the past few months. Next on the agenda is the third A’lle Chronicles, in which our intrepid heroine moves to Upper Canada to continue her investigation into the shadowy figures that are creating such havoc for the A’lle.

Here’s Marcelle’s intriguing cover for Identity Withheld, and a brief excerpt from the book:

“At last she reached the edge of the porch roof where she remained crouched like an awkward gargoyle, her arms out, her tee-shirt plastering itself against her shivering body.

The chair under the doorknob in the bedroom squealed suddenly as someone tried to push the door open and she glanced down at the ground, fifteen feet below her. If she missed the tree, she could really hurt herself.

Then the bedroom door burst open in a shriek of splintering chair and she launched herself off the edge of the roof.

For a split second, she thought she would crash to the ground, a broken mess. Then her windmilling arms connected with the tree branch and she flung her arms around it, her feet scrambling for purchase on a lower branch.

She hung there, half supported by a flimsy branch barely within reach of her feet, her hands barely able to hang on to the upper branch. A movement out of the corner of her eye caught her attention and she turned her head to see a man sticking his head out of her bedroom window. Even in the faint light she could see that he had dark eyes and dark hair and a hard, angular face.

His gaze caught hers and his eyes widened in horror as he grasped her situation.

Then the branch beneath her feet broke and she plummeted to the ground, the flesh on her legs and ribs tearing under the assault of tree branches.

She heard someone scream and had time to realize it was her before she landed. Her feet hit first, then the rest of her followed. She slammed her chin into her knee, her head snapped back, and everything went dark.”

©Marcelle Dubé 2021

If you think that’s intriguing, here’s the back cover blurb:

AFTER A LIFETIME OF RUNNING FROM HER PARENTS’ MYSTERIOUS PAST, IT FINALLY CATCHES UP TO CLEO.

Fredericton, New Brunswick: The sleepy town in Atlantic Canada is only the latest stop for Cleo Brennan’s nomad parents.

But Cleo’s tired of drifting from town to town. At 23, she wants a permanent home. Let her parents keep wandering if they want. She’s done.

While she’s long suspected that her parents are running from something—or someone—suspicion becomes fact when someone rams their car into the river.

Now Cleo must discover the identity of the shadowy individual threatening her parents’ lives… all while keeping an inquisitive detective at bay.

Then someone attacks Cleo and she must figure out, finally, what sent her parents running so long ago—before those behind the secret kill her.

Welcome to the blog again, June! What can you tell us about your latest book?

Ashton Price inherits her aunt’s B&B in Cranberry Cove, Washington. But before she can open, she must discover the identity of an elusive intruder who appears by night. Could the handsome gardener who claims he once knew her aunt be the prowler?

Gardener James Atwood is actually a corporate executive in the cranberry business but can’t allow the beautiful Ashton to learn of his true identity or why he works in the peaceful gardens at the inn. He’d like nothing more than to help Ashton discover the secret that dwells within the walls at The Inn at Cranberry Cove.

What is the inspiration behind your story?

About fifteen years ago when my husband and I lived in Lacey, Washington, we took a weekend jaunt to Ilwaco, a coastal town on the southern end of the state. We stayed in a lovely B&B which was once an old church. Today the inn is called The Inn at Harbor Village. I always knew I’d write a story about what secrets lurked within inn’s walls, and now, I have!

Do you reward yourself when a book is finished? If so, what is your favorite treat?

Yes, when I send the book to the editor, my sweet husband usually says, “Let’s go out to dinner and celebrate.” Since I love to dine out, I say yes! With this last book, we went to a wonderful Italian restaurant, Carlton’s, in our little town.

Were there any surprises that came up as you wrote your story?

Yes, my lovely and proficient free lance editor found some “holes” in the plot so she recommended several changes which I incorporated into the story. I couldn’t do without my friend and editor, Fay Lamb.

Who was your favorite character to create?

In this story, I had fun with the villain, Robert Atwood. Though I didn’t like him very much, it was amusing to give him some negative traits I see in others and in myself—selfishness, greed, telling lies.

Are you part of a writing group?

I’ve recently joined the North Alabama Word Weavers group that meets once a month in Hartselle, Alabama. Best of all is the fellowship and camaraderie available with other authors.

What’s next for you as an author?

I’m beginning book two in my Cranberry Cove series. The story is set in Cranberry Cove, Washington, as in book 1. Gracie Mayberry is a barista at the local coffee house in book one, and she will be the heroine of book 2. The hero is a new character who’s visiting from Seattle Washington. Watch for that book around May 1. Book three will be out in September 2021.

James’s pulse surged when Ashton strolled from the kitchen to the deck. Well, why not? Wouldn’t a good-looking woman in form-fitting jeans and bright red t-shirt catch any man’s interest? He propped the shovel against the elm’s trunk and took a few paces toward her. “Morning.”

“Thanks for fixing the faucet.” Ashton descended the steps, paused on the lawn, and smiled. “Is there anything you can’t do around here?”

James swallowed. I can’t fix the past. He coughed a fake laugh. “Plenty. Like baking that delicious coffee cake you served me last week.”

“There’s more where that came from. You’re welcome to breakfast anytime. My guests might enjoy the company.”

He rubbed his stomach. “You got a deal.”

She looked somewhere into the distance. “I’ve been here awhile and haven’t taken a moment to walk the entire grounds.”

“Let me go with you. If there’s one thing I know, it’s Gina’s property. Did she ever tell you the legend of the missing gems?”

“Oh, I’ve been on many treasure hunts looking for those elusive gems before I realized it was a made-up tale.” Ashton laughed.

“Oh, I don’t know about that. Look at the home you live in. The original structure has been changed somewhat, but it’s one of the most beautiful homes in the area. Look at the land they owned. The family was wealthy, especially for their time. The original owners were speculators and bankers. It’s rumored that those seeking gold in California would barter anything and everything to make the journey. They even gave up true worth, like precious stones, even inheritances, because of the fever the hunt for gold caused.”

“You said the original structure?”

“The inn has been remodeled and updated several times. I’ve read a little of the history of this area.”

She smiled. “I’ll do the same so I can share the inn’s background with the guests, but Aunt Gina told me she had problems with guests showing up so they could actually sneak around and hunt for the gems.”

He glanced around the perimeter of the yard. “Your neighbor to the north moved in a couple of years ago. You want to walk in that direction?”

“Let’s start here and follow the path around the flower bed toward the azalea bushes.”

“Sure.” He started down the road. “Before you got here, it was covered in red flowers. You’ll see next spring.” But what would twelve months bring?

“A whole year running the inn. I hope I can make a success of it like my aunt did.”

The trail curved around the elm where the stone marked Gina’s grave.

Ashton touched her parted lips. “Oh.” She gasped. “More yellow roses. Did you leave them?”

“No. I figured you had.” He leaned forward and sniffed. “These are fresh from a green house or floral shop. They weren’t here Saturday, either.”

They passed the fountain and headed toward the west side of the inn.

Ashton looked skyward. “What if whoever left the flowers did it in the middle of the night? It could account for the sound I heard. Maybe the muddy footprints were left there when the person meant to tell me so that finding the flowers wouldn’t alarm me. I thought I saw a shadow pass the window while I was stuck in the shed.” Even Ashton couldn’t convince herself that she either was forgetful or crazy with fatigue. She had called out while in the shed. No one had answered her.

James looked around. “The ground is covered with grass here so we wouldn’t likely see footprints. We could check with the local flower shop.”

“Flower shop?”

James laughed. “There’s only one. Cove Creations.”

“It wouldn’t hurt to ask.”

“I’ll go with you.”

Welcome back to the Blog Allison! Tell us a little bit about yourself for those who didn’t meet you the first time around:

I’ve lived in a lot of different places, but country roads and hills are my favorite. And preferably those hills would be covered in snow. I’m a fall and winter girl all the way. My best friend during the summer is the AC. When I’m not writing suspense, I’m reading or walking my dog, Sal

Now, can you describe your story in 5 sentences or less?

Lizzy Bennet loves life as a lawyer in the city. And not just because of the miles it puts between her and her ex. However, when she’s attacked on the street just hours after learning her identity was stolen, she tries to call home for help and ends up with the last person she expects: the very same high school boyfriend who broke her heart. He says he’s there to help, but she’s not so sure, and now, all the endless questions and regrets are clouding her judgment and preventing her from seeing the dangerous saboteur closing in.

I love the sounds of that premise! What was the catalyst for your interest in writing?

Writing has kind of jumped all over the timeline for me. I started crafting stories because of the movies I was watching as a kid though. I was a know-it-all movie buff/critic before I was 12 years old. Watching movies like Star Wars and The Princess Bride made me want to create worlds and stories of my own. That I would want to read.

Do you have a day job? If so, how do you find time in your day to write?

I work part-time for my church. It’s awesome and not just because it keeps me from falling victim to my reclusive nature lol. Being part of such a giving organization is so rewarding and it is so encouraging to see real people of faith just being real. Finding time to write is hard whether you have a day job or not. There’s always something demanding your attention. You just have to fight for it. And start to think of sleep as optional. Kidding but not really.

What led you to publish with Anaiah Press?

When I finished Glazed Suspicion, I wanted to find a Christian publisher with a reputation of integrity and faith. Anaiah flashed on my radar pretty quickly.

Are you a night owl or morning person?

Mostly, I feel like neither. I love my sleep. But I am more likely to pull an all-nighter to work rather than try and fail to get up early.

Were there any surprises that came up as you wrote your story?

Pretty much everything is a surprise for me. I’m not much of a planner or outliner. So, I usually don’t even know what’s going to happen in the next sentence.

Who was your favorite character to create?

I love Lizzy. She’s feisty and brave but struggles like the rest of us too. It’s fun to be in her head.

Who was the first person you allowed to read your completed book?

My husband doesn’t usually read my published stuff until it’s in print, but I let him read the books I’m too scared to show to anyone else. The ones that are the ‘maybe somedays.’ The ones I’m nervous about.

I love your cover for SPRINKLED WITH SABOTAGE. Here’s a short excerpt from it:

The Monastery Murders moves to Canada when Antony is invited to lecture on the British saints who inspired the founding of Toronto and Felicity couriers an ancient manuscript connected with Saint Patrick to monasteries in Montreal and Vancouver. A spectacular train journey across the breadth of the continent carries them even further away from the murder Felicity witnessed in England. Or does it?

5-Stars for this Cozy Read!

In Against All Fierce Hostility, Donna Fletcher Crow continues her signature brand of blending church history with the twists and turns of a cozy mystery as Antony and Felicity journey across Canada, dogged by shadowy people and circumstances. Crow sprinkles the clues and red herrings throughout the story so ably that I couldn’t figure out the villain until the shocking ending.

The marvelous details of Antony and Felicity’s trip across Canada give a glimpse into the country’s expansive geography and its youth as a country. Crow brings the Canadian setting to life–glaciers, mountains, northern lights, prairies filled with grain from horizon to horizon, lakes by the thousands–it’s a canvas that provides the perfect expanse to who’s after the original document from St. Patrick’s lifetime. And it provides the perfect crime scene for the astounding ending.

Lovers of PD James will enjoy this new twist on The Monastery Murders. Highly recommended!

Here’s some Praise for Against All Fierce Hostility to go along with my 5-Star Review:

In her signature lyrical prose, Donna Fletcher Crow crafts another tale full of contemporary mystery bound up in religious history. She weaves into an irresistible story fascinating academic references to early Christian fathers, evocative ancient poetry, and descriptions of liturgical practices exotic to this Baptist worshipper. Then she makes the whole thing even richer through the setting of a cross-Canada train trip, colourful as a glossy vacation brochure, that does justice to my home and native land. A thoroughly entertaining and satisfying read!

~Deb Elkink, The Third Grace and The Red Journal, Canadian award winners

Deception and intrigue at every turn, and we’re never quite sure who’s on the side of the angels until the very end. Someone wants the illuminated manuscript that Felicity and Anthony are carrying across Canada, and familiar faces keep showing up in unexpected places. As usual, Donna Fletcher Crow brings us a mystery wrapped in a fascinating cultural package. Her rich prose swept me along on the Canada journey and pulled me deeply into Felicity’s worship experiences despite my lack of liturgical background. Crow loves to bring in stories of the saints, and hear Anthony’s story-telling lecture series (the reason for the Canadian trip) does that brilliantly.

Jackie, I’m so glad you could join us today to talk about your new book and your writing journey. First, can you tell us a bit about your book and what inspired you to write this story?

Laurie, thanks for hosting me. I’ve always loved the coast, and it was easy to pick my setting as a beach in the Low Country of South Carolina.

Andi Grace Scott is a dog walker and has lived in the fictional town of Heyward Beach her entire life. One morning she goes to take care of her mentor’s puppy. The puppy is upset, and her friend is dead. When the sheriff is suspicious of her, Andi Grace decides to find the killer herself. When her parents were killed by a hit-and-run driver who was never caught, she learned the bad guys don’t always get caught.

And is this the first book you have published?

This is my first full length book.

How long has it taken you to get published?

I started writing about ten years ago, and it took me a while to find the courage to query an agent. Dawn Dowdle signed me, and she’s been a true blessing.

What draws you to writing cozy mysteries as opposed to straight up romance or romantic comedies?

I’ve always enjoyed mysteries, and cozies with interesting characters and a touch of romance is what I love most.

Are there any authors who’ve influenced you in your writing? Do you have any favourite authors?

My critique group has stuck with me as I transitioned from writing romantic suspense to cozies, and I appreciate all of them.

What advice would you give to other writers trying to break into the Christian market?

Pray, pray, pray. If you feel like God is calling you to write, surround yourself with Christian writers who understand the struggle and can pray you on to victory.

What hobbies do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Walking on the beach with my dog is my favorite hobby. Now that I live on the coast, I don’t collect shells like when I vacationed. I take in the beauty of my surroundings. Every day is different on the beach. Photography is another hobby, and of course I love to read.

Do you have any quirky, must-have rituals before you get to writing9? (candle burning, café latte, coffee shop only, etc.)

I have music playing softly in the background, and I always have coffee or tea at my side.

Anything else you’d like our readers to know about you and your work?

My oldest granddaughter, Brooke, helped me name the dogs in Bite the Dust. My other granddaughter, Allie, loves dogs and recently planned a birthday party for her dog, Chewie.

If you could have dinner with three famous authors, alive or dead, who would they be?

Agatha Christie, John Grisham, and Diane Mott Davidson.

Where can your readers find you on social media?

Secrets can be deadly.

One steamy South Carolina morning, Low Country dog walker Andi Grace Scott discovers a client’s dead body. Police quickly decide she’s the prime suspect. Horrified, she knows she’ll have to turn detective if she’s going to convince them they’re barking up the wrong tree.

Proving her innocence could be a tall order. The local police never solved the hit-and-run that killed her parents; Andi Grace isn’t sure they’ll solve this crime either…not when they have a convenient suspect—one caught with the possible murder weapon in her hand. She’ll have to follow every clue and call in every favor, even if that puts her in danger.

If you love strong heroines, coastal small-town life, and dogs, you’ll love Bite the Dust.

READERS: Jackie is giving away an E-book copy of BITE THE DUST today to one lucky person! You can leave her a question or comment below and Jackie will be checking in throughout the day to chat with you. Thank you, Jackie for your generosity.
